  31. Here`s some depressing news about the Amiga but you all have to know at
  32. some stage...We have to take a stand. (See comments after)

  36. Almost a year to the day after its takeover by Gateway 2000, the future
  37. is still far from clear for PC manufacturer Amiga Computer and its cult
  38. technology.
  39.  
  40. While the man charged by Gateway to exploit the technology says he has a
  41. continually changing vision, he is certain that Gateway will not
  42. manufacture new Amiga machines.
  43.  
  44. And while they wait for that vision to be shared with the masses, Amiga
  45. fans say the rescue has not led to a resurgence in confidence among
  46. supporters.

  48. For example, take UK system builder Siamese Systems.
  49.  
  50. Earlier this month, Siamese announced a development strategy to build an
  51. Amiga/Wintel clone.
  52.  
  53. Its aim is "to bring the Amiga into the mainstream computer market to
  54. create a hybrid Amiga/Windows platform that can bring rewards to the
  55. Amiga owner by giving them access to low-cost PC components, and to the
  56. PC owner by bringing the richness of the Amiga software base".
  57.  
  58. But before the comany completed development, Siamese managing director
  59. Stephen Jones wrote to the Amiga faithful to say he needed 500 orders
  60. with a down payment.
  61.  
  62. "We have invested everything into this Amiga market, and cannot do it
  63. any longer unless there are people who are willing to order the
  64. product," he said.
  65.  
  66. Mr Jones, who believes the Amiga "has one of the greatest operating
  67. systems and hardware designs ever," says users are holding back on
  68. investing in hardware until they see something happening at Amiga.
  69.  
  70. Amiga is a research and development entity set up by Gateway 2000 in mid
  71. -1997 to work alongside Amiga International, which is the sales and
  72. marketing operation.
  73.  
  74. Amiga general manager Jeff Schindler, who headed the innovative
  75. Destination PC/TV project at Gateway before moving over, says he has a
  76. vision for the Amiga, but at the moment it changes "almost weekly".
  77.  
  78. However a number of factors are firm.
  79.  
  80. There will be no new Amiga computers from Gateway, but there will be an
  81. upgrade to the operating system - together with software development
  82. kits sometime this year to support development by the Amiga community.
  83.  
  84. The longer-term plan is to develop reference designs for various types
  85. of products which will be licensed to third parties.
  86.  
  87. Mr Schindler sees Amiga`s future in providing products for the "globally
  88. connected digital society".
  89.  
  90. There is now time frame for this master plan, but Mr Schindler told the
  91. faithful at last week's Amiga98 show in St Louis, Missouri: "We're in
  92. the valley, and we're going to have to spend some more time there before
  93. we come back up."
